I read this book last summer when my girlfriend was reading it and I've spent the past year pondering the literary implications of this masterpiece. The Red Room of pain symbolizes Anastasia's internal conflict between her desire to be with Christian but her overwhelming feelings of being inadequate; much like the conflict between pleasure and pain caused by incidents in the red room. Christian is a twenty something billionaire beefcake who's pants hang from his hips in that way (oh my). He flies helicopters and can literally do anything because he is the most powerful man in the world. Anastasia is a 21 year old English major who is a virgin and in general is plain and boring. You can see why she would feel this way.
