3963833 No.3963833[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

My boyfriend of a year bought me a gift to celebrate the occasion. A Folio Society boxset of Jan Morris Pax Britannica. I am working on a historical epoch and my paperbacks are quite worn! Unfortunately in buying this "thoughtful" gift, the man FORGOT that I am a strict Vegan! What should I do? He cant return themand I will not have them in my house or sell dead cow to anyone! I have suggested the trash and he was livid! Suggestions?

The cow is already dead.

You are disrespecting its corpse by wasting it.

Also, do you realize that scientists have recently suggested that plants may be able to feel pain?

Vegans just can't win unless they starve.

Welp, that's evolution for ya.

Good luck.

Are you dense? Vegans simply avoid blatant exploitation of animals when possible. Buying a pair of leather boots is blatant. Killing thousands
of insects and rodents when harvesting wheat
is unavoidable.

Maddox is extraordinarily lame.

But just because he once posted something about animals being killed when wheat is harvested doesn't mean it isn't true or relevant.

Seriously... any vegan who doesn't grow their own food, or alternatively get it from someone who farms reeeeeaaalllly carefully with hand tools, is a hypocrite. They might as well eat steaks. They simply do not save a significant amount of animal lives compared to how many they contribute to killing.

I guess if they just really like cows, pigs, and chickens and they don't care about killing other animals, then it makes sense. If I ever met a vegan like that, I could respect their choice.

Well yeah, but lets say the average omnivorous human is part of a system which kills 3 million animals a year.

Cutting out the meat would probably only reduce this to about 500,000 animals a year. Of course I don't know the exact numbers, that would take an in-depth study.

But okay lets say a vegan who eats organic wheat and other organically farmed vegetable products, and who doesn't like insects in their house (I don't know any American vegans who do) kills only 5 % of what a meat eater kills (which seems very low to me). That's still 150,000 per year.

150,000 dead living beings. Of course, they could say they don't care about the insects and earthworms. But once they do that, where is the line drawn, and what's the criteria?

Intelligence? Some mammals are pretty dumb, some fish and reptiles aren't much smarter than insects.

Mammals and birds only? Animals larger than a breadbox? If their think is respecting life, none of this flies.

If it's simply to prevent suffering caused by pain, well how do define pain? Most animals have a nervous system and ways to sense damage, but there is debate over whether a non-emotional reaction precludes the label of "pain."

Many scientists will cite studies saying that insects, worms, and even fish do not feel pain. Others don't subscribe to the narrow definition used in those studies.

The lobster thrashes around in the pot. The fish struggles on the line. But this is labelled a "reaction to threatening/damaging external stimuli" rather than pain. What do you think, vegans?
