Well it's originally a drama on Croatian language not sure if English translation is available.
"Gospoda Glembajevi" by Krleža (original title) is about the fall of the rich family. This book is a good description of Yugoslavian rich layer of populace.

As Simple As Snow by Gregory Galloway.

I don't typically care for YA fiction, but this has such a depth of feeling and characterization - in addition to a subtly layered plot - that I keep coming back to it.
/lit/ is likely to dismiss it off hand based on its blurb - which does make it sound rather cliche - but I love it.
Then again, I may be biased; this book made quite a dramatic impact on my life when I first read it at 16 or so.
