Dear e/lit/ists,
I am of the opinion that illiteracy is the bane of civilization. I think the growth of the illiterate population signals the fall of culture and society.
Recently i have read articles talking about how Jihadis in Afghanistan and Philippines are using children as suicide bombers and child soldiers, and are able to fill their heads with ridiculous ideas (like suicide vest only kill the other people) because they are illiterate and uneducated.
I fear that the culture of illiteracy is on the rise. People are growing more and more willing to not read, they accept information blindly simply so they don't need to read and educate themselves. I fear that for all the good the internet has done it is being used as a tool by the uneducated to facilitate their illiteracy and spread their ignorance.

I bring this issue up because i wish to ask how can we fight illiteracy? and am i over reacting?

In World War II, when Latin was still regularly taught in schools, 96 to 100 percent of soldiers could read proficiently. Then they started teaching only English, and by the Vietnam War only 73% could read. Problem, plebs?

but I think you're overreacting somewhat

there's a pretty big problem with education, no doubt

>> No.3860754

It's not the cause. It's certainly one of the symptoms and it certainly contributes to ignorance and barbarism, but it's not THE cause. Remember, one can be quite well read and still be a barbarian; Eichmann quoted Kant at his trial.

pic was the only one that dealt with reading
also schools don't really educate our children there are more and more illiterate graduating from high school and our teachers couldn't careless if the people in their classes learn as long as they get a pay check

whats /r/atheist?

i thought that a group of people who read literature might want to discuss the decline of said /lit/
there are few good books being written and people couldn't care less as long as they can discuss Kim and Kanye's baby

also just bought brave new world is that related to my subject?

Illiteracy is at the lowest rate it has ever been, in the history of the world. More people are literate now than at any period in the past.

Give it up, man. This is like a rally to save cockroaches. Your problem is invented. Imaginary.

>> No.3860762

I kind of agree but it's not about literacy as such, it's about education and culture.

As Olson put it, "When the attentions change, the jungle leaps in."

What fucked up rose-tinted glasses have you been wearing, and what could you possibly imagine the past to have been like?

Total oblivious fool detected. Go dig a hole, OP, time to stick your head in the sand.

The problem isn't illiteracy; it's lack of education (not the same as illiteracy), lack of wealth, and the totalitarian manipulation and ownership of information from those with wealth. Paul is an excellent example: he presents himself as being an everyman's champion that crusade's for freedom when all of his actions lead to the continued disenfranchisement of the American people.

Yep, relate it back to education

Okay thanks for the attention i apologize for burdening you with my worries .
Ron Paul ain't that bad
i don't live in Texas or Kansas so neither he or his son represent me
But at least they add to the discussion unlike their peers
But it is my belief that representation only facilitates laziness

i am going to go numb my brain with vidya games

Does Op know that illiteracy actually means the inability to read? The way his post is it sounds like he means the uncultured or anti-intellectual.
>I think the growth of the illiterate population signals the fall of culture and society.
What growth?

ALSO,
Ron Paul really isn't that bad. At least not on privacy issues and foreign affairs.
