Depends on who you ask, OP. I tend to think of it along the lines of a particular schema for interpretation, how we interact in the world, how we make things and so on. For example, hot button political issues are usually divided on ideological lines.

I always associated that word with "the abstract," "the immaterial," which includes in that definition the definition anon provided here >>3854035

its more specific than that though

it's not just a worldview, its got an element of being programmatic and rigid and making claims to explanatory power

Ideology has a complex story.
In the enlightenment it was the science of how ideas combine. A sort of chemistry of ideas.

Our modern understanding comes from Marxism where ideology is the representation of social forces that inverts them as if in a mirror. In short ideology for Marx is the liberal point of view that history and society are driven by ideas (rights, equality, freedom) and not by economics.

From there you can see how our common notion of ideology came about: ideology concerns itself with ideas and not the "real" world.

In post-marxist theory ideology through althusser becomes and organization of knowledge that offers a certain view of the world.

When we talk of post-ideological world today it means that we do not think any more of ideas (or how to conceptually organize the world) but we concern ourselves just to manage it pragmatically.

There you go.
