I spent the last two years of unemployment drinking, masturbating, and surfing the Internet.

I am now trying to get things back together, and the most difficult thing is getting back into reading. I cannot focus or comprehend what I read like I used to. What do I do?

Pic related, I am trying to read GoT.

Read short stories.

Do you want to read something good, or is GoT where you max out in terms of quality?

Dude, the show is quality but here on /lit/ we tend to talk about literature.

Go ahead and delve into what interests you most. Maybe reread a book you know you love. What are your interests?

Any kind of reading.

If you're just looking for general recs, then this is a good place to start.

If you want more specific advice, feel free to ask.

It's like you're a child again. Read Harry Potter or The Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia.

Are there any resources relevant to relearning to read as an adult?

Just jump right in man. I mean, you do know how to read, right?

Yes, but it ceased becoming a second nature to me.

It will be again once you get into the habit of it. I'm suprised reading wasn't part of your NEET life, I got into this lifestyle to have time for such things.

You could start with this. Easy reading and enjoyable.

Is GoT giving you trouble? If so:
The Dresden Files: fun is the best word to describe it. You might not like it committing to a fifteen book series, though
Gentlemen Bastard Sequence: it's basically Ocean's Eleven in a fantasy world. Scott Lynch is a full on aspie, so he hasn't written a book for five years. There's only two books in the series, but they're both easy to digest.
Daemon: near future sci-fi, deals with cool stuff like hacking, 3-D printing, autonomous cars. There's no real focus on character and Suarez's writing, while wooden as fuck, manages to explain technological concepts while keeping the story going.

>Implying that won't scare him away
He's obviously a casual.

Same story here. Somehow I drifted away from quality literature and instead just ended up reading manga all the time. Good manga, mind you (Kazuo Koike, Inio Asano, Junji Ito, etc). Any suggestions? I'm up for anything, but something easy to start off with would be a good.

On the Road was my introduction to "Deep" literature. It's fun and quick-paced.
No Country For Old Men has lots of action and intensity for a literary novel. McCarthy is the only literary author who can convey action, in my opinion.

Perhaps something like 1984. It's carefully structured and to the point. It wants to shock people, like manga, which is useful for drawing you in.

His third one will be released in the next months. So its actually a good time to begin reading the first two.

Well you are off to a pretty shitty start. REad some real literature if you want to get your life back in order. Murakami write better fiction and he's just as contemporary and easier to read.
