I have been diagnosed with clinical depression... wait, wait, wait, this isn't a "I am depressed and I want to whine about it" thread.

Anyhow, eventhough I don't take any medication (they mess my head up and as a STEM student I need my full brain power), I have learnt to embrace my depression and live despite it. I feel like shit most of the time, but I keep going on; it is just my brain chemicals, I am no different than the handicapped who live inspite of their physical shortcomings.

So, could you recommend works of literature written by, or depicting, people like me? My experience is certainly not unique.

Thank you.

I'm really embarrassed for NEETs who post on different boards about their depression.

Once upon a time, depression was just called living. Now, you clowns are so sheltered and "sensitive" that having a zit makes you stay inside for 7 weeks straight "recuperating". Hilarious.

Depressing literature is the easiest to find. Let's break it down by country, shall we?

Russia :
Dostoyevsky (Notes from the Underground, Demons)
Tolstoy (The Death of Ivan Ilyich)
Turgenev (Diary of a Superfluous Man)

Japan :
Mishima (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion)
Soseki (Kokoro)
Dazai (No Longer Human, Setting Sun)

France :
Sartre (Nausea)
Céline (Journey to the End of the Night)
Perec (A Man Asleep)

Germany/Austria :
Bernhard (Gargoyles, The Lime Works)
Kafka (Metamorphosis)
Hamsun (Hunger)

Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Cioran and Kierkegaard also wrote extensively on 'depression' that is to say 'anguish' 'feelings of unease' 'alienation' 'moral sickness' etc.

>Melancholia is a mood disorder of non-specific depression, characterized by low levels of both enthusiasm and eagerness for activity.

>non-specific depression

>Melancholia was described as a distinct disease with particular mental and physical symptoms in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Hippocrates, in his Aphorisms, characterized all "fears and despondencies, if they last a long time" as being symptomatic of melancholia.[9]

"Depression was initially called "melancholia". The earliest accounts of melancholia appeared in ancient Mesopotamian texts in the second millennium B.C. At this time, all mental illnesses were attributed to demonic possession, and were attended to by priests. In contrast, a separate class of "physicians" treated physical injuries (but not conditions like depression). The first historical understanding of depression was thus that depression was a spiritual (or mental) illness rather than a physical one."

The funny thing about the 'man up son' crowd is that they are under the impression that all people have the same range of emotions. They project their crude interior life onto others and conclude that they never had any mental states that were truly troubling, so another person can't have those either. They must be pussies, since they 'can't handle' these simple and manageable feelings.

Actually, the people who are susceptible to depression are often more intelligent, more sensitive and have a broader range of perception and emotion, leading to a greater vulnerability and a greater possible range of suffering.

When the 'man up' crowd thinks they are superior, they are in fact cockroaches mocking the butterfly for it's fragile wings. Yet they never soar to it's height and they will never achieve it's beauty.

Depression is not about external factors. It's all internal. The brain is malfunctioning and it makes you want to die. Humans natural setting is survival mode. When a chemical imbalance is compromising the most basic, most important instinct of a species, you've got a problem

Most of you don't know what depression is. Even many of you defending its legitimacy. Depression is just a word. The actual reality of what it's meant to represent can not be expressed by a word. To many of you, depression means "sad", "moody", "dejected", "miserable", etc.. A whole range of human emotions that display some level of feeling. Depression is the opposite of that. It is the absence of emotion.

It is not triggered by a zit or by poor self-image, by rejection or a feeling of helplessness or any other trivial factors someone could come up with. It is the real death of the ego. It is the rejection of sentience. It is not romantic. It is unnatural.

But it's an option that isn't even considered these days mostly, while during the rest of the history of humanity there was always some sort of opt-out. You had shamans and monks and all kind of secluded types being supported or at least tolerated or even revered. Today the totality of our culture is social, involved, hectic, extroverted and noisy. Real empathy is helping the person figure out their own problems so they can grow and not need other people as crutches, so they can find and utilize their own inner strengths.
