just finished reading this, wondering if anybody else read it?
opinions?

>> No.3709253

It's a below average book with a visible gimmick to lure people in

>> No.3709251

It stinks.

>> No.3709255

A gimmicky embarrassment.

>A gimmicky embarrassment.
No, that's Virgin 20/m/UK !VIRGIN/FJM.

HOL is just word kitsch.

>> No.3709266

A pretty decent book with an intriguing though sophomoric gimmick that it is in vogue to hate on /lit/ right now.

The end.

>> No.3709269

As you can tell it's fallen out of favor on /lit/ as of late, I still enjoy it though.

I really liked it, though I can definitely see the problematic nature of in its gimmick.
Reminds me of the "found" horror stories that were so in vogue in the late 18th and early 19th century. It's sort of avant-garde gothic, in a bizarre way.

>> No.3709280

i thought it was pretty good, its pretty difficult read because of the way its laid out, but i enjoyed all of the navidson record sections.

what did you think of the conclusion?
i couldnt put the damn thing down and then once i finished it i kinda felt a little dissapointed

still one of the most interesting books ive read in a long time

>> No.3709299

By a Turd, for Turds.

Note how all its fans can say nothing good about it except that they "liked" it. "I like it." Stellar literary analysis from these pinheads. Brilliant.

The ending was a massive letdown, though I did enjoy the "critical analysis" that was included. It really filled it out and drew out all of the more postmodern unsure themes that ran throughout it.
Thinking back on it (it's been like 4 years since I've read it) I'm not so sure that I enjoy the multi-level narrative, but I think the Navidson record itself was very gripping and original with a great bridge between the Lovecraftian horror that is too expansive for anyone to understand and the Freudian uncanny. It's a pretty interesting move as far as "horror" goes.

"It was sooooo crazy"

>> No.3709342

I liked the two main stories running throughout and the levels of various mediums telling different stories. And the visual style of words being thrown on the page in interesting ways and colored text and huge footnotes was also fun. Overall, it was just a fun book to read. It did things differently.

>> No.3709423

I liked it, even with all the gimmicks. It was an enjoyable read.

>> No.3709461

I thought it was fun and one of the most creepy books that I have ever read. I don't think I would elevate it to great art, but I'm glad it was written.
