No one knew who William Faulkner was in my Honors class in Literature. So don't worry. You're not alone. People just mostly don't read nowadays - or read bad books for the most part.

And? I took AP classes in high school because I didn't want to be in the regular classes full of niggers. Plus they can give college credit, so there are pragmatic reasons for taking them. People aren't necessarily going to care about the subject matter.

>>3678003

People just take that shit for college credit and shit. It really doesn't mean anything. When I was in high school I thought it was something, too.

Wait until you read Crime and Punishment and every discussion is just everyone talking about how bad murder is.

This. I didn't meet a single reader in four years of honors and AP english. The only friends I made that like literature and philosophy were the slackers, skaters, and weirdos that were in auto shop and the school newspaper, and half the kids on school newspaper were pretentious overachievers. The only cool ones were a tall ginger who was obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson, a short guy who talked about BDSM and weird fetishes and loved Southern Gothic, and a codeine addict who had a hard-on for the Beat Generation.

TL;DR you aren't going to meet any interesting people who like literature in advanced English classes. You're only going to meet overachievers that are obsessed with getting into their dream college. Take an ROP class instead.

>> No.3678046

>>3678039
Yeah I'm definitely noticing that. I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as a slacker, but I'm definitely not as obsessed with my grades as some of the cunts in that class. But they also have jobs and play sports so I guess they can't really be bothered to pick up a book in their spare time anyway.

What did you say to them after they laughed? Im really interested why they would laugh, I have no idea why what you said is funny.

Also I've only met two people from high school that were as into literature and philosophy as me. One was our valedictorian and the other nearly flunked out of our high school. I met the first through AP Euro, the second through drugs.

I guess they started laughing because of how serious my face was when I said it, but I don't really understand how my sincerity in my response caused them to respond the way they did. I do wish that I would've asked why though now that I'm thinking about it.

That's my favorite anime ever, too.

Hello there. Used to post on /a/ while that was still airing because I loved it so much.

I think that anon was right when people enroll into certain /lit/ classes for credit. That certainly was the case in our /lit/ classes. It was a good thing that our professor saw through their pursuits and gave As to those who actually liked reading literature and gave insight to what they've read.

All the people knew about Faulkner was A Rose for Emily because that was required reading, but nothing else. It was that severe that I was asked by my professor to assist in his discussion of Faulkner because no one else was familiar.

People are just too into Twilight and young adult fiction nowadays. It's sad.

It's because it sounds pretentious as fuck. And it is, they might not have heard of him, but anyone at a college level of cultural familiarity would see you're a stupid highschooler try to posture beyond your cultural exposure. Have you even read a single one of his novels more than once, let alone any criticism of him? No? Accounting your given ignorance of the majority of well-received american authors, is what you're saying full of shit? Yes, and so obvious you can have not even have heard of Faulkner and still find you a faggot.

Also, in my experience, AP students are tend to be more immature, more undeveloped than any other students. They've more base tastes (the most childish sense of humors), more naive perspectives than the average C student.

What I mean is this
>in AP English IV class (people are supposed to have interest in literature)
is fucking stupid. They didn't join the class for an interest in literature, other than banal attempts to fill a niche of popularity more poseur than yourself. Yes, it's worse in any top university, because these kids are the ones working to achieve what's necessary to get in.

Here's a tip, have some humility. Don't deny your ignorance, and don't wear that denial on your sleeve. And more importantly, hide your powerlevel. You don't know how to handle it, and it's not as high as you think.

Thanks for the compliment. There are some great anime out there, though, just like most media. Right now I've been frustrated with anime's quality so I've avoided going to /a/. But you should give anime a chance - I thought Tatami Galaxy was one of the best anime I've ever seen.

Why? I'm not familiar with the show but is there any value beside a unique art style, and maybe slightly 'weird' in direction?

>> No.3678201

>>3678175
I'm watching episode 1 on youtube now. Looks like a 'relatable' melodrama about college and relationships from an awkard, lonely protagonist's perspective. The intro sequence was really bad. The art style is 'quirky'. Is that the appeal?
Can you tell me what you find valuable about it?

>> No.3678213

>>3678201
It's a series featuring Groundhog Day and the quirky art also helps. But it is quite unlike any other series I've seen. The storytelling's the brilliant part for me. It reminds me of Absalom, Absalom! although you may disagree, of course.

I'm on the second episode. I like it, thanks for the recommendation. I've not really looked into anime but this is cool, I like the vague mythological presence and the fast pace. I was worried that the characters would be simple but it's already becoming interesting. Is it just one season?

>> No.3678232

You should've said Jack London.

>> No.3678237

>>3678229
Yes. It's only 11 episodes. Stuff slows down from episodes six through eight, but then picks up after episode nine. The last two episodes were really good, though. It has a cool amount of obscure references that I liked poring through, too, and it's great because careful viewing actually foretells the ending in a way.

You were probably really enthusiastic and sincere about it, that looks dweeby. You need to practice your cynicism and be droll otherwise you look like an autist or a slack -jawed rube. Never show anything genuine or emotional, regard everything with a winking hint of post-modernism otherwise no one will take you seriously.
