I once wrote an observation on my thoughts I had while walking to the restroom after a few hours of feverish painkiller-induced dreams. It involved involuntary memory of summer camp, invoked by the beautifully visible Pleiades. Maybe I can dig it up from my notebooks.

DFW had been to rehab and quit using both marijuana and alchohol by the time he finished IJ, but the rough sketches or inklings of the novel were written in the late 80s, when he still used weed frequently.

I always write sober then edit high. For some reason I take a different view and can fix my flow, structure etc

Last time I took psychedelics, I opened a few books to random pages and read a few lines. I'm not even kidding, the pages changed appearance to reflect the tone of the book. Like with On The Road, the paper started to look like it was cheaper/pulpier and the letters got shorter and wider almost like they were bursting with energy. With Virginia Woolf's The Waves, I got the sense that it was printed in a fancy old font on really nice thick paper, like it was some beautiful tome, when actually it was just the Penguin Modern Classics edition (same as On The Road).
