Should I read Diamond Age?
I'm hesitant because it seems the main plot involves a girl who reads something meant for the elites, which seems stupid to me.

If we can suffer through your OP, you can certainly suffer through a handful of descriptions of girls doing things.

just read it, there's a bit more substance to it than you think

It's easily Stephenson's best book. Definitely read it.

I've never read Stephenson before and am about to start Snow Crash. I'm going in with low expectations as I have this image of him as trying to be overly witty and pandering to the geek subculture.

just read the first half. after that there is no point.

Yes, seems retarded for me too.

He is geeky in that he misreads a lot of youth culture and culture in general. You get the impression that a character like YT is an attempt to lampoon youth culture while still being slightly hip but he misreads it so severely that his comic characterization becomes like this weird third thing which is almost sort of neat in its own right. It's the same with Raven, though a bit less noticeable, he both mocks it while he misreads the character and the mindset he is drawn from..

It's also difficult to tell where Stephenson is purposely being a bit cliche for ironic effect and where he is unintentionally being cliche because he is a young writer writing this kind quasi-intellectual post-cyberpunk thriller stuff which lends itself to being cliche.

It's a pretty weird book in terms of plot and setting as well so that just compounds everything. Don't get too serious about it and you'll probably enjoy it. The Diamond Age is much more polished and steady and after that he just becomes a writer of historical fiction with a science heavy edge.

Snow Crash really isn't the best introduction to Stephenson. It's an interesting experiment, but there are a lot of parts that just don't work. It's a fun read if you're willing to accept its flaws, but The Diamond Age would be a better one to start with.

I read this book four years ago so I could write a paper on it in high school. I don't remember a thing about the book, except that I don't think I hated it. Take from that what you will.

Don't be turned off by the girl being a main character.
Many great books have female leads.

just read it and see what you think
