How do you guys feel about Neil Peart?
He writes all the lyrics for Rush, one of my very favorite groups.
They are mostly science fiction oriented.
and influenced by Ayn Rand

>Hemispheres is a masterpiece
>2112 is a masterpiece
>Xanadu is a masterpiece
>Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece

The CWA book read like cheap fanfiction. I only enjoyed it because it was RUSH-related.

>> No.3674737

Science fiction, uh? It may reflect the way he plays his drums, too much technique and almost none feeling. He'd look like a robot whilst playing in various Rush stage presentations, his face is always static.

>> No.3674749

he's a staunch randian, which is incredibly gay.
some of the lyrics are fucking pants-on-head retarded. they don't flow at all and are way too verbose for a rock band.
'red barchetta' is so fucking bad
the lyrics do work in an ironic, funny how clumsy they are, sort of way for some tunes. 'spirit of radio' and 'tom sawyer' come to mind, but that may just be because they are two of the best ruch songs.
imo he's a fucking terrible lyric writer, but they work in how silly and bad they are sometimes

One of my favorite songs lyrically from Rush is 'The Pass' off Presto.

Neil Peart, in my opinion is the best drummer of all time. Hands down.

I'd still have to take John Bonham over Neal Peart.

I think that Rush are pretty crap and Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are really overrated.

The most common, and only legitimate complaint I've ever heard about Rush is about Geddy Lee's voice.
But these same people listen to ACDC. ACDC! The worst singer of all time!
Geddy Lee is an acquired taste.

Rush has good music and sometimes passable lyrics. Some of their lyrics are hilariously bad though.

They're musically good. All three members are very technically proficient and write some enjoyable music.

But if I were listing lyricists whose work I could consider good literature, there is a long list before Peart.

'The Pass'

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Done with life on a razor's edge
Nothing's what you thought it would be

No hero in your tragedy
No daring in your escape
No salutes for your surrender
Nothing noble in your fate
Christ, what have you done?

>> No.3676232

>Rush
Nice prog band, nothing more.
>Neil Peart's drumming
Really good, though nothing outstanding. Gavin Harrison is probably the most perfect "prog" drummer, when it comes to technique. Still there are other drummers I prefer.
>Peart's lyrics
Sometimes good, most of the time cheesy sci-fi stuff. Superior prog lyricists: Peter Sinfield, Peter Hammill, Richard Palmer-James, Robert Wyatt, Jason Byron

>If any of those names refer to them, I congratulate you.
I'm sorry to say that, but they don't. None of these names were refering to DT. DT is like prog going the most horribly way wrong you can possibly imagine. They were kinda interesting from their first album to Scenes From a Memory, but they slowly turned into a band unable to play anything but sequences of boring metal riffing and uncreative use of odd time signatures. Porcupine Tree and Opeth went shit too btw.

To clear up the names of the lyricists I mentioned and recommend you some good prog:
Peter Sinfield (King Crimson, ELP on some tracks)
Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator)
Richard Palmer-James (King Crimson, Supertramp)
Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine)
Jason Byron (maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot)
I forgot to mention Keith Reid (Procol Harum). He's also a great lyricist.
