I've been reading some Plato. Are the Benjamin Jowett translations good? I don't want to pay, and I see the Jowett translations on Gutenberg. How much better are modern translations? Are they worth paying for? Thanks

There is absolutely no way you actually did this.

I doubt the guy learned ancient greek by himself just to read Plato

he didn't say by himself. learning greek to read plato is fairly common, studying plato is a field in itself.

and even if he had said by himself, it's not that hard.

>it's not that hard.

It really is. And learning an ancient language to read one author whose works have been translated is idiotic.

They're very dated. Try some of the ones on these lists

You can get used copies of most of them for not much money. I'm poor as fuck and I buy books all the time; never be so cheap that you rely on old-ass public domain translations.

My teacher studied Greek besides philosophy, and he is currently translating some of the Aristoteles works that haven't been translated into Danish yet.
Besides being able to discuss Plato on a much deeper level, he can use greek for a variety of things.

Seriously, there is a lot to benefit by learning ancient Greek and reading Plato. A whole new level meaning and silly philology will be awaken to you. If I could go back in time I would start learning ancient Greek freshmen year of college.

OP, what makes you read in Plato? Interested in philosophy? Considering studying it in college?

I suggest this compilation of Plato.

http://www.amazon.com/Five-Dialogues-Plato/dp/0872206335

I'm really just a sucker for the Hackett way of making philosophy books, so is my university.

Also this.

http://www.amazon.com/Plato-Love-Symposium-Alcibiades-Selections/dp/0872207889/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1365209903&sr=1-1&keywords=Plato+on+Love

Seriously, get this as well.

http://www.amazon.com/Philosophy-Before-Socrates-Second-Introduction/dp/1603841822/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1365209942&sr=1-1&keywords=philosophy+before+socrates

Starting with the PreSocratics, especially Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, can set you up to better appreciate Plato.
