Why do most book covers suck so much? The vast majority have some generic photo with a generic title to go with it, you'd think with so many authors today you'd have more people trying to stand out with something striking.

So what's your favorite book cover? Quality of the book itself is irrelevant.

I know what you mean, and when we get an original looking cover you can be sure every new edition is going to out-shit the last.

I don't even think pic related is that good of a cover, it's just been burned into my mind.

I don't like the 'bezige bij' publisher much. They used their moral high ground "we were the good guys in WWII" a bit too much in getting as big as they did. And they are in part responsible for the big number of fiction books published on the resistance which really stagnated the literature scene for decades.

Of course some of the best Dutch books were published there, but still.

No I'm just saying coliquolism during most of modern English has been to refer to Africans as cannibals regardless of flesh eating. Tell a Victoria that you saw a cannibal and they will picture all the stereotypes including eating habits. That's why Shakespeare had othello mention cannibals (generic tribesmen) and anthropaphagi (flesh eaters.)

I had a copy of the Hobbit with this cover when I was a kid. The copy I have now is one of Gandalf walking past The Hill. Unfortunately, my copy of LoTR has covers from the live action movie. I'm not the only one who absolutely despises when they put real people on book covers, am I?

In the case of anything written by Bret E. Ellis, it's a heads-up to the shit writing inside.

inb4: Man, now that's a book cover!

The cover doesn't matter. The worth of a book is it's contents.

Pretty cool. This is the second time I learned of a new animal on /lit/. The first time was the vampire deer.

Presentation does matter. One should only buy beautiful things and reward the creators of beauty as to create an incentive towards greater beauty. We must consume our way into aesthetic heaven.

I've seen a current edition that does, I think Oxford World's Classics?
Also the current Nabokov covers are pretty nice I think with those pale green illustrations.
