quick grammar question.

is this the correct use of a semicolon?
Me and my sister have one thing in common; we both have penises.

>> No.3589826

Should be 'my sister and I'.
A colon works much better; the semicolon works if the second clause describes or follows on from the first but is not the same thing:

'My sister and I really like ice cream; it is pretty good.'

One exception to that chart regarding conjunctions is that you should use a semi-colon before however.

>Tom is gay; however, so am I.

I see semicolons used before conjunctions all the time though
this is just another commonly overlooked thing then?

>> No.3589962

This is wrong; a semi-colon beside "however" is a matter of preference.

semi-colons are sometimes used beside conjunctions when a sentence becomes too complex to be understood without semi-colons:

>It's a pretty nice day in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; Mumbai, India; and New York, New York, but I don't think it's nice in Seattle, Washington.

But something simpler, like

>I like dogs very much; and their fur is so soft.

is just incorrect.

Tom is not gay; rather, he is a raging faggot.
Rather also works.
It also works for the last item in a list with commas:
Our group was constituted by two women, Andrea and Laurie; Rick; and Shane.

Why not use a period?

>It also works for the last item in a list with commas:

Why would anyone write a sentence like that? Good Lord.
