Why would I need it? I only read books, it's quite a simple thing. My kobo's stock software seems to be fine at reading epubs. It's all I need

>> No.3558007

it's pretty much the same as a .mobi.

They both take about 3 seconds to covert to each other on a super-hipster-master-race-macbook-pro, like I'm using.

The format to keep an eye on is the pesky .pdf that likes to fuc£ up in c@nversi@n&£^ and have quadruple line breaks. Curse you pdf, you are the bane of my reading existence *shakes fist in air*.

Yea seriously, wtf pdf

I bet you plebs never even heard of DejaVu.

Look it up, so you can later say you liked it before it was mainstream.

Anyone who knows a good semi-pro software for creating your own mobi / epubs?

What does DejaVu do?

This. Fuck pdfs. They're fine for pc reading however, which explains why a lot of the good rare stuff is pdf, it's often from before the e-reader era.

Abbyy FineReader is the best OCR software in most cases. I convert the PDF to HTML using that, then use Calibre to clean up line breaks and fonts, output to epub and use Sigil to do final cleanup.

OCR is too fussy. briss and papercrop are the way to go for your e-reader pdf needs

>> No.3558129

I always convert epub to PDF. The only problem is that all the text appears smaller because two pages are jammed onto one.

DJVu is like a super compressed ebook format

They got 1000+ page biology textbook in the form of directly scanned images down to less than 10Mb. It looks not great however.

is there any user-friendly djvu reader you would recommend? Basically I´m looking for something as easy to use as Acrobat Reader.

sumatra pdf

reads about every ebook format, natively

better than acroshit. seriously uninstall that spyware.

while we're at it, why do mobi files converted from epub always come out with a lot of useless empty spaces when I convert them with calibre?

>> No.3558275

>>3558256

It's probably the CSS the epub uses. There's a "delete blank spaces between paragraphs" option under heuristic processing. You can also output to HTML without CSS and use find+replace to manually remove them, then convert to .mobi.

"Why is it, Diogenes, that pupils leave you to go to other teachers, but rarely do they leave them to come to you?"

"Because," replied Diogenes, "one can make eunuchs out of men, but no one can make a man out of eunuchs".
