So let me explain this, when I was younger I used writing as an outlet as I'm sure many of us here have at one point or another. For me, personally, I worked on very small collaborative pieces with other people on some forums and created characters. It was good to be able to express myself, I made solid connections with others that I crafted epics with, and I put a little piece of myself into everything I made. This was years ago but not a day goes by, almost, where I don't think back on (for example) one character in particular who was both my favorite and best creation.

Does this happen to anyone else much? I mean I'm sure I'm not alone, obviously, but I'd like to hear how others feel about this kind of thing.

I understand what you mean, although I delegated my memories for several characters of my creation, rather than just one.

Just like you, it allowed me to use these characters as proxies to express my own hidden and true feeling, whether it was desire for destruction and havoc or for peace and love. (As much as they sound extremely contrasting concepts, I managed to work it in.)
Very rarely did I allow others to see my work though. I frequently thought during those days, that the repercussions of allowing people to see the kind of work I produced was too costly in comparison to its temporary benefits.

Well fuck me, I probably could have explained better but I can assure you it was not fanfiction shit.

"niece of sefiroth but moar powerful with 20 wingz fallen angle" makes me sick.
