How did you get into reading?

I really want to start reading, but I've only read a handful of books in my time. My time is unlimited these days and I'm usually watching 3 movies a day. I would like to start picking up /lit/ as a new form of entertainment but I guess it's hard getting into written works after being such a visual fiend all these years.

I would just suggest checking out a recommendations list here on /lit/ if you want to go that route, and then just pick out what you like and who you like, dividing with genres and themes and whatnot. Guy recommended a Tom Wolfe book to me, and now I'm into books about drugs and journalism.

>visual fiend

what organ would you normally use to read books?

>smelling your way through finnegans wake

i guess, in that case, nothing would be lost

>> No.3516994

obvious answer - think of movies you liked that were based on books. read the books. or if you don't want to see the same story again, look up the books and read similar books / books by same author.

There's too much out there for anyone to direct you to a specific place to start. you can look up lists of classic literature and find stuff worth reading but who knows whether it will appeal to you or not. I don't know anything about your tastes but I'll recommend starting with a collection of Ray Bradbury short stories since it's as good as any recommendation we could give you.

Used to hate reading. In HS the only book I actually read completely was CitR. I really enjoyed it. When I was like 18 or 19 I remembered it and wanted to reread it. This was around Christmas so I had some money and bought a nice hardcover. I was also unhappy with myself so I was interested in reading as a form of self-improvement. It just snowballed from there.

The fact that my sister and mother are avid readers probably helped.

In my part of the world, we're taught to read and write in 1st grade. I kinda liked it and read even since.
But why do you wanna pick up reading? Your easily entertaitained by your tv, obviously?

Do you enjoy Sci-fi or Fantasy? Either one is great for getting you into a reading mode because you can easily add the visuals and settings of movies/TV shows. After awhile you will become 'good' at reading and you will be able to easily immerse yourself in a book.

I got into reading to impress an attractive English teacher I thought I was in love with. I was 16 then. Point being, doesn't really matter how you get into reading, any source of motivation is fine. Once you're in, there's so much to explore that you'll be hooked for life, if all goes well.

The first book I ever read (that wasn't pulp or YA and had some literary value) was The Great Gatsby. And it changed everything for me.
Just read some modern classics, OP. It's the best of both worlds (that is, the literary world and the realm of pop culture).

Idunno man I've always read books. Usually in phases though. Like I'd read a lot as a kid, then I'd be repulsed at the idea of sitting down and reading a book. Then I'd read like a fiend again. Repeat repeat repeat.
Anyway my problem has always been deciding what to read. Just pick something that has good reviews on amazon or something and read it.

Movies suck because they're made to be watched from start to finish. I can't sit around for two hours, that's why I read books—I can go in short bursts throughout the day. Hardly anyone reads a book cover to cover without stopping; the author knows this.

You would probably obtain a better feel for it by simply attempting to make reading a habit anyway.

Wow finally someone who thinks like me. Also add the fact that not only it's long, but I can't help to think that it's fake. Sure, it's not the point but it's different from a book and from a painting or music. People usually say they don't get why I am like that because books are the same "fake" shit basically, which I disagree.
I just can't watch movies. It's not that I have ADHD, I can read and study for hours, or even hang around in a museum for a day. But I just can't get into movies for the exact same reason and the fact that it's all set up it's not helping either.
Got bored by the book? Just stop and come back later.
Got tired in a museum? Come back another day.

When I was 16 or so I realised I had barely read a book in my life, so I decided to change. This was while my entire personality was undergoing a pretty massive change, more or less, and starting to read was one of the positive things I began doing in my life (among other things, like picking up the guitar and starting to work out).
