Read this when I was about 12 or so, so I still count it as part of my "childhood." I'd say this cemented my interest in racially-based stories.

>> No.3434598

While we're on the subject of children's books, does this book sound familiar to anyone: the plot was a middle-class English or Australian family who are very dysfunctional. The author was 17 when she wrote the book, IIRC. I read parts of it when I was 10 and thought it was hilarious. A decade or so on, I'd like to re-read it again. Does anyone know?

>> No.3434600

I'm having difficulty remembering the name but there was some children's horror book that I read about a young boy and his sister moving to a new house in the country. Sister was fat and lazed about in her room reading or something. The boy decided to go exploring and stumbled upon a man with a missing arm at which point he ran away and at some point had his eyes eaten by birds. As you can probably tell my memory of the story itself is as absent as my memory of the name I just have fond memories of it for some reason.

I remember being in 4th or 5th grade. I was temporarily in a really mediocre school in a ghetto district. One day everybody in my class got free books from the counselor and I noticed the vast majority of them had Captain Underpants or something similar. I got Tuck Everlasting and was subsequently disappointed, even somewhat angry. The teacher commented on how great of a book it was and was glad that's what I got because she thought I was a really smart kid who would appreciate it. I didn't give a fuck, I wanted Captain Underpants, so I never touched the book after that day.
Years later in my senior year of high school we had to read Tuck Everlasting for an assignment. I then realized I actually would have loved the story as a kid and felt like shit.
