The Inner Sanctum 1942 ed. of War and Peace is probably my favorite physical book I have ever owned. It's absolutely gorgeous, and the forward's comparison to the time of the novel and the Eastern Front of WWII is breathtaking and gives such a sense of history about the novel.

I would say yes, it gives you a in-depth backround of middle earth. Very interesting read, especially if you are a Tolkien fan.

You realize they do this in bookstores when any stock is unsold. They just rip the covers off and send them back to the distributor because the shipping costs are less and it's easier to throw away the book.
