So, /lit/, how do I into metaphysics?

(as someone who knows nothing of philosophy yet)

>> No.3392608

Vehemently deny it exists, or if you admit it to exist, that talking about it is useless.

Learn philosophy, seems like the obvious route

Give OP tips on how to do this, seems like the obvious route

All it takes is a little abstract thought.

Look up the "problem of universals"/read Republic and Parmenides, look up realism and idealism, being, necessity, causation, time and space, identity, mind, determinism, and freedom.

Oh, and most of all, don't talk about it with literary critics or philosophasters. Learn to spot the lemons and avoid them.

wikipedia, philosophos.com, plato.stanford.edu, and your local libraries are your friends.

Probably the best thing to do is to understand the basic rules of logical argument
Remember proofs in geometry well its a lot like that. Once you learn that then you should be able to form arguments along with understand some philosophical texts. In all honesty philosophy is the easiest thing to try as it has a very low bar of entry.

It's like exercise, it's painful and rewarding. Reading the stuff people have recommended will help, and it takes years, decades to become good at it, like any skill

Philosophos.com is not very well-researched.

I would replace that with the IEP. It's a great tool.

Thanks. Any other recommended literature? Or will it mostly be general research to begin with? And any suggestions for spotting the lemons?

I'm studying maths/physics so I understand logic/proofs.

Thanks for the reading suggestions, that's what I was primarily looking for. (this is /lit/...)

Wikipedia also varies tremendously in quality, though for what OP's asking for wiki sites aren't very good at all (at least not on their own). There's a decent enough VSI for Metaphysics, which is as good a place to start as any.

Excellent. Start with logical positivism as an introduction to metaphysics then.

Read some books explaining platonic and aristotelian metaphysics. Try your uni library.

Lol. Don't do this.

Logical positivism denies metaphysics is even possible, and it is itself old hat nowadays anyway.
