I just thought of this.

Is our modern internet generation basically the exact opposite of the Beat generaiton?

What exactly is the beat generation? I've never bothered enough to care. And I've never directly consumed any 'beat' media.

Nice to see another person using trap vernacular ironically. That is so rare on the internet.

How so?
The beat generation's main goal was collecting experience and finding things out on their own.

We depend on the internet to give us the information, often blindly believing things to be true.

you should probably relax.

>he beat generation's main goal was collecting experience and finding things out on their own.

uhm... no. you're projecting.

it was about counterculture, sex, drugs and general hippie shit [see the dharma bums for ex].

>We depend on the internet to give us the information

yes, it's a shame now we know the correct dosage for a first-time heroin user

>often blindly believing things to be true.

oh yes i forgot the beat's generation obsession with following the scientific method rigorously and their lack of naivety...

true re: experience, but that's only because we have much easier access to it (they actually had to GO find it because the tech available to them was the automobile) however we are still as self-absorbed and self-important as they were.

>> No.3374763

>>3374738

yeah i guess i meant the sort of cutting edge technology that allows for young people to do the shit that older generations couldn't and see the world and experience what' else out there on their own terms.

i don't think that will ever change. the details and means might, but the basic need/desire won't

It was what it was, it is what it is today. First of all, the beatniks and the hippies were members of connected, but separate movements. The beat generation lived alongside and thrived in the american culture of 1940-60 with the goal of consuming and participating in as much of it as possible. They were a socially progressive response to thriving urban life, but were still heavily involved in the american folk movement in that they reconnected to their cultural roots through music, art, and literature. The hippie movement was a rejection of the american lifestyle, which became very protective, sheltered, and paranoid in the 60's in response to the beatnik movement (the drug use mostly) as well as the civil rights movement (people were racist as fuck). Hippies made free loving colonies, beatniks traveled the country and became absorbed in the beauty of american culture. What we have today is pretty much a post-progressive society with very complex and heavily political issues that have little to do with morality and can rarely be solved with historical evidence (so we don't see many political movements that successfully DO anything, ex: 99 percent). The modern youth will not deviate beyond drug use in college because they all like to have an internet connection and cable, so they will all try to find a stable job so they can waste the rest of their lives consuming instead of experiencing.

It depends on the topic and whether people take it seriously.

The idea could have prompted an interesting discussion. I think it's a shame that any hint of philosophy or cultural movement is drowned in sarcasm and pure irritation. You can either say YOLO in real life if you're being ironic, or you can say it with sincerity and represent the youthful tendency to indulge in drugs or sex or violence or stupidity for the sake of living while you can. It gives people something to anchor their opinions on " I took xtc because YOLO, and I had a really good time that night" "I totally agree with that, and I too take xtc and drink because YOLO. But don't do too much drugs, because you could end up throwing your life away, and never forget, YOLO." Sure I think Jack Kerouac was an intellectual god compared to the insight and education of your average twitter using 15 year old girl with a spray tan, so that's kind of funny, but he wouldn't write off a youthful philosophy just because he's smarted than a few high school girls who live by it. Didn't mean to be condescending, just trying to get some insight out of people.
