Dante is possessed by rage because he hasn't been able to kill his father with his giant sword and because he was named after the crappy Pierce Brosnon movie with the volcano.
Virgil is a foil for Dante because he's being a whiny bitch because Dante made fun of the Aeneid.
Little do they realize that they will have to combine their powers to reach the game's alternate ending (Paradiso).

Don't take this seriously.

Dante is possessed by rage because he hasn't been able to get around that his father always hated on him whatever he does, he wants to be a hairdresser and his father comes around and says "NO DANTE! THAT IS GAY". He struggles to find his place in the world and has to live with the successful Virgil right in front of his face cause Virgil gets all the praise from their father. Virgil got a misleading name cause he isn't a virgin anymore.
