Ever read Sinclair Lewis? He was the first American novelist to receive a Nobel Prize. His style has been criticized for its journalistic, crude narrative, but this directness has also been argued to be one of his virtues. His tone of "summing up" and shaping the story through broad strokes was really, I think, a distinctive trait that made his works both accessible and layered, not merely crude. Babbitt, one of Lewis' most famous books, is a character study in these broad strokes, which created an everyman so recognizable to the American consciousness that we now think of this same person in the cliche of "mid-life crisis."
