/lit/

I want to start reading GOOD books; I've read very few books on my own (Animal Farm for example) but I don't know where to start.

Could anyone direct me to some kind of 'essentials' I should read? Or at least reccomend some entry-level literature?

There's been like five "recommend me entry level books" threads recently. What's got everyone excited to read books again?

Anyway, I would say our novellas chart is a good start for someone looking to get into literature. Some are denser, not quite "entry-level," but as they're novellas, they don't take as much sustained effort to get through as longer works do.

I'd just go through them and see which sound appealing. I'll upload our collection of ebooks of works off the chart in a sec.

Some /mu/ thread in which you roll for self-improvement and one of the numbers was reading a book.

Leaving that aside, I am genuinely interested in starting to read

It's kind of long for that.

Some of these are off of our contemporary novellas chart instead, and some aren't on either, but they're all novellas and good books.

The shorter ones from this are also on there.

(sorry that took so long)

Here's some general fantasy

Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Wheel of Time
First Law
Earthsea Trilogy

This.

And if I were to throw my hat into the ring I'd suggest 'Winesburg, Ohio' by Sherwood Anderson.

Relatively short, but every bit as brilliant as some of the larger acclaimed books that get mentions on this board. (though this one goes get quite a few mentions as well)

More people getting back into reading is always a good thing.

SO I've read a few of those lists and they have books from hundreds of years ago and that, i obviously don't give a shit about that old timey garbage.

What are so much more recent must reads?

If you're just looking for a cheap, entertaining, shlocky read, why not just go pick up something with a best-seller sticker on it?

It's more the fact that I find the language used by people hundreds of years ago to be difficult for me to enjoy reading.

Old stuff isn't necessarily more difficult just because it's old. Dumas is usually mentioned as an author who proves that "old" literature doesn't have to be obscure or difficult or stuffy or boring or whatever adjective people usually use to describe it. Dumas != Dickens. Try reading the beginning of the Three Musketeers or the Count of Monte Cristo and see how you like it.

Dumas père is life-affirming macho lit

Anyway, I'm sure you've had more than enough suggestions already so I'll shut up now.

Those are contemporary novellas. All should be post-1970.
