Happy birthday, Bram!

How are you celebrating?

I'm sad to say I left my copy of Dracula at home, so I won't be able to read it today.

>> No.3127253

Oh man. Maybe I should put my other books on hold to read Dracula.

Or um... wait, how is Dracula's Guest? That's just a short story, right?

I only know anything about Dracula. I know he wrote oodles of other stuff, but I never looked into any of it.

Maybe others on /lit/ have read other works of his?

Dracula is stupidly overrated. So , so many good books in the genre and yet people are infatuated with it.

Do you know what? Fuck fucking Dracula. Fuck it.

By reading Candida to celebrate fucking over Henry Irving.

>fucking over Henry Irving.
Care to elaborate? I admit I have no clue what your referring to.

Bram Stocker was Henry Irving's theatrical manager, and it's thought that the character of Dracula is somewhat based on Irving. George Bernard Shaw had a long running feud with Henry Irving due to Irvings refusal to present several of his plays, possibly stemming from Shaw's non-sexual but arguably romantic relationship with Irving's wife.

In some ways, Dracula's death at the end of the novel could be seen as Stoker fucking over Henry Irving (tenuous at best, but still), and I'm doing the same by reading Shaw.

should read
>Irving's refusal

I was reading Candida anyway, and when I saw this thread I realised the pretty weak connection, and decided to post it on /lit/ to try to look clever.

...So Stoker didn't actually fuck over Irving? It was Irving who refused to present Shaw's plays, and Stoker merely fucked over Irving my killing a character who is "thought" to be "somewhat based on Irving."

I still don't see why you're mad at Stoker.

I'm not mad at Stoker, I love the guy. Why would you think I'm mad at Stoker? I just thought of a really tenuous link between what I was already reading and the thread and decided to post it. It's what I do.

And anyway, if I was angry it would be at Irving. If I was. Which I amn't.
