Any good?

>> No.3069051

I hated it, but I had big expectations.
The story is built up around the jokes, which are only partly funny.
I didn't like the main character.

>> No.3069054

not really. if you're under the age of 18 give it a go, otherwise read something decent.

It's excellent light reading.

I think it is brilliant personally. Douglas Adams is a cool ass bro. It is very light reading. Oh, and the first one in the series is weaker than the others, but if you like the first one you'll like the rest.

>>3069059
Thanks for the advice, and to the other guys too. I have a book including all the novels so if I'm reading the first I'm reading the rest.

>The USS Suicidal Insanity.

>> No.3069090

as others have said, light reading but worth it. The series sort of gets dull at the end though.

The talking cow is the best part.

Very good for being just a light novel of gags and jokes.

>> No.3069114

I would only recommend this book because it's part of pop culture. Other than that it's not worthwhile.
I didn't laugh a single time, and normally I laugh often when literature is funny.(Burgess, Bukowski, Kishon, Burroughs, Nabokov etc)
It's just too obvious that the plot is just a vehicle for the gags, and so the gags become tedious with time.

Keep in mind all the jokes are a satire to the human condition, so it is the good kind of humor that matters.

>> No.3069163

>>3069152
so what? if I still don't laugh it's worthless. Unfunny satire is the worst thing.
Burgess is satire, too, btw, and it is funny.

>> No.3069169

light reading, but entertaining, i like it, sometimes you just think OH YOU I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE MR ADAMS and thats nice

If you're the type of person who browses reddit and cracked.com and watches The Big Bang Theory, you will absolutely love THGTTG.

The only people who have ever heard of these websites are those who have browsed them or heard faggots here complaining about them. Shut up.

People from Reddit and Cracked who like Big Bang Theory would probably agree that they like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, they certainly talk about it often. And why do you assume that the guy who asked the question hasn't been to those sites?

>> No.3069488

>>3069222
Burgess wrote a lot of other things aside from A Clockwork Orange, mostly political satire so it was bucking the trend of his writing when he wrote ACO

>> No.3069510

LOL at the pretentious /lit/twats on here. Adams is brilliant and Big Bang is funny. If you think otherwsie you're a douche. Pretty simple.

>> No.3069527

>>3069510
Adams is pretty good, and I think The Big Bang Theory is no good. That I think it sucks and that Adams isn't brilliant doesn't make me pretentious, that you think it makes me pretentious oddly makes you pretentious.

>> No.3069531

>>3069510
>big bang
>funny

LMAO SO FUNNAY LE NERD CULTURE XD

But seriously though it doesn't invent any humor based off good subjects, and comparing it to Adams isn't relevant, because the styles of humor are different, with Adams actually being capable of it beyond observational bad humor. And if that makes me pretentious Fuck you.

>Big Bang is funny

No, it's not. You only think that because you giggle along like a schoolgirl to the laughter track. Try watching your 'funny' show when the laughter track has been removed. It's painfully bad.

Big Bang vs The IT Crowd

There is a major problem with that
That being the awkward silence that is usually filled on shows like Malcolm In The Middle, Futurama, and other comedy shows that don't use a laugh track. The video's funny and I've wanted to see something like that, but if they were going to do the show in that way, they would have paced it differently.

As for the writing, that's just, like, your opinion man.

no

It's kind of a cultural thing, as people here have suggested. You can try some of the radio programs (or even the text-based adventure) if you're not sure about the style.

IT Crowd. Big Bang Theory is terrible.

Hitchhikers Guide is good though. Also try reading Douglas Adams "Meaning of Liff". Its a dictionary that uses place names from the UK as words for things that don't have words for them.
Like "Budby - A nipple clearly defined through flimsy or wet material."
if you google it you can read it online. Good for a giggle at least.

>>3069583
They are both terrible, since they are essentially the same show. One is American and incredibly popular (so "uncool") and the other is British and much less popular (so "acceptable to like"). Anyone who says that they are substantially different in content is lying to themselves.

Still doesn't explain why it's like a kitchen sink drama penned by Tao Lin.

Which, by the way Tao, you should totally do. Big Bang Back in Anger.

>> No.3069962

I loved it. Adams was a master at twisting the English language humorously, and the jokes and situations are brilliantly satirical. Somebody else said it gets dull towards the end and I agree, it sort of overstays its welcome

>> No.3071215

Haha, look at you guys pretending you're so cool by saying that it's "light reading". All books are the fucking same reading level unless it's like in sanskrit or shit. You just read the words, no difference, but unlike people like James Joyce Douglas Adams is extremely clever, a far better writer, and a fuckton of his ideas are still extremely relevant today.

Read it, best series that's ever been written. Seriously there is nothing that tops this fucking series.
