Was talking to a doctor the other day and he told me:

"Some people just don't read [insert serious literature books] because they aren't interested, I like reading [insert twilight/hunger games, etc] because they entertain me, for sure you also don't like to read medicine books, do you even know what a [insert medicine related topic] is?"

Is he right? I know deep down that I've gained some wisdom from literature, but is it really useful? Does everybody need it? Should people be interested? How can I argue agains this?

>> No.3056467

If you don't know how to argue for this, then the answer is kinda obvious. You know everyone dies in the end anyway, right?

>> No.3056471

you /sci/ fuckers are getting a little better at hiding your trolling

i still hate you though

Yes he is right.

You read 'Literature' because you want too, not because it's noble (or highbrow, or whatever other terms that ignoblize ones interests)- if you value the 'Canon' of Literature that's cool.

I don't and niether does your doctor.

I liked both Twilight and the Hunger games.

Does that knowledge take away from your pleasure of reading what you consider literature?

If so why?

I don't understand your question. Argue against what? That people read crap for their own pleasure?

>> No.3056778

It would be stupid to waste your free-time on something that doesn't interest you. You gain so much more from doing the things you enjoy doing. Life is too short.

Your doctor is a dullard with no imagination.

Tell me, would you be saying this if you weren't interested in complex philosophies or whatever? All I'm saying is that it's not for everyone. And I don't think you should blame people for liking the things they like or not liking the things they don't like.

Do you like music? Think about how many of the greats lived colorfully and spontatneously, focusing on intuition and aesthetic rather than ideas.

To some people it is and to others it isn't. I'm a person who enjoys to read for it's own sake but others might not feel the same way and that's fine with me. People will do what they like, doesn't mean you can't promote reading but don't be a snob.

>Is he right?
Sure, to some extent.

>I know deep down that I've gained some wisdom from literature, but is it really useful?
We all do. Do you use what you learn?

>Does everybody need it?
That should be pretty obvious, no.

>Should people be interested?
If they want to, yes. If no, it's their choice.

>How can I argue agains this?
Why do you need to? One, you don't need to disprove every person you meet that says something you disagree with, two, he is right. Some people read for enjoyment, some read for reasons like what you stated.

every good artist is also a sadist
mozart wouldnt have been mozart without painful training and long travels across europe (which basically killed him at young age)
happiness is a byproduct that comes later

Doctors are stupid as fuck but think they're intellectuals because of the way society treats them.

All a doctor does is memorize a bunch of definitions and work hard.

There isn't much creative thinking or any thinking outside the box going on.

Reading is for helping you to relax, if you want to seriously learn something then you take notes and use reference material.
You need a pretty tight butt hole if you want to get through something from a hundred years ago and not consider it a punishment. That's my opinion. But I have a pretty tight one.

>> No.3057063

>>3057025

You also need to pull yourself out of your comfort zone to challenge your conventions to learn new things.

But I guess intellectual growth is just elitist bullshit, right?
