Hello /lit/. I want to learn about religion, so I am looking for a book that will explain to me all the major cults and religions of today. What is your best recommendation?

>> No.3023582

Huston Smith - The World's Religions

Covers the big ones and some native traditions.

get yourself a world religions textbook.

I'll recommend a website to you to learn about a rather obscure american cult that I've never seen covered outside of niche literature (in the technical sense of the word, not the heaven's gate style) heathengods.com

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AbsurdlySharpBlade
>An absurdly sharp blade is a bladed weapon with Absurd Cutting Power because it's just that damn sharp. No magic, technology, superpowers, or other type of Applied Phlebotinum required to slice and dice to your heart's content. Such things may have been involved in the production of the blade, but when in use, its cutting power comes from its pure physical sharpness alone Blades like these almost always result in a Clean Cut — in fact, about the only thing they can't cut is a similarly sharp weapon. Expect to hear some Audible Sharpness (Audible Gleam optional) whenever one of these blades is in use.

this will get you nowhere toward understanding world religions

yeah, ok, religion, like everything else, has a philosophical foundation, but this will tell you nothing about cargo cults

it fucking sucks

it's full of a ton of dumb awkward spergy creepy-ass bullshit that's really, like, proud and upfront without the delightful self-awareness, self-hatred that is the earmark of 4chan. we hate it for the same reason we hate "teh penguin of doooooom" bullshit, if you get that.

So what should I look for to learn more about cults?

>> No.3024742

I'd recommend Ninian Smart's Choosing a Faith. Read it for a world religions course in uni.
