He's one of the first philosophers to realize that Hegel is full of shit. His system is based on the idea that the world is in its core irrational, so he basically says that Hegel's "whatever is rational is real (the full actualization of the potential, implicit nature of Spirit), and whatever is real is rational (reality understood as the pregnant self-expression of Spirit)" is bullshit.

According to him, intellectually, we can only know the world through representation (like Buddhists Veils of Maya). Our intelligence can only build representations which will never gasp absolutely the nature of the world. But we can also "know" the world from a direct way: our desire. Our primal instincts, the will to live, IS nature itself, that's the core of the world, everything else is just an "illusion" (including the idea of self identity), something our human nature needs to survive, but not the "truth" itself.

but hegel does not seem to be proven full of shit. "rational is real" seems equally valid a systematic interpretation of the world as the world is will and representation. the difference is that hegel looks outward to history as a continuous objective measuring stick, while schopenhauer lives in the subjective moment to moment contingent truth.

Reason is just a tool we use to make better representations of the world. The world isn't rational (only our representations of it are), this is why science has its hard times making hypothesis (and this is why there are so many thing we can't absolutely understand). We use our reason to understand an irrational world. There isn't anything like the Geist, well, maybe Schoppenhauer's Wille, but that's not rational.

Hegel just tries to give a justification to a christian imperialism: if we are the ones who rule the world it is because that's what (God) the Absolute Geist wills: if it happens it's because it's rational. Why Germanic culture ruling the world is desireable? Because it's rational. Why is it rational? Because this is what happens.

Schopenhauer knows the difference between representation (rational) and Will (irrational), Hegel doesn't ("Reason = representation =(god's/Geist's) will").

Hegel is proven shit as far as his theories have nothing to do with what we know nowadays about reason, epistemology and logic.

I'd like to see exactly where I said this.

To me, the true significance lies in the fact that he was one of the only philosophers to correctly see the difference between cogito (I think) and volo (I want).
I think he signifies this by quoting Antisthenes: aut mentem parandam, aut laqueum, which means something along the lines of "either understanding, or a rope". Now, to me, this is the central point of philosophy. You can either use your brain to think about life, or you can use it to self-destruct. Schopenhauer chose the first, by turning away from the world, as done by the Stoics and Buddhists.
