Maybe not the right board but what the hey...

Basically I'm interested in getting into theatre. I watched a few plays when I was younger, mostly some Irish ones and Shakespearean ones. I'd like to get more into theatre; basically watching plays and stuff, but I'm wondering what to watch and where to look for. It'd take too long to wait for plays to show up locally, so I'd like to watch good quality recordings, etc.

I'd really like to see stuff with a strong fairytale/fantasy aesthetic too. I like "fabulous" things. We're thinking of doing some stuff for a local group and I'd like to go down that route so we can get a hold of some nice costumes etc.

Any ideas?

Nope. Thanks. Can you recommend some performances that I can download? And where could I get the texts?

Downloads of the plays there that are findable online. I can't help you with recommended performances though. Hopefully someone else can.

If those are the ones I collected keep in mind that a lot of the older stuff is probably on Gutenberg but I didn't bother adding them for various reasons.

The play recommendations are based on which are good to read, not good to watch. Language-heavy plays are going to be worse when performed, as time is needed to dig into the text. I've been disillusioned with theatre performances lately, so if you could help the OP, I'd be interested as well. I heard Tenessee Williams is good, but beyond that, no idea.

I know nothing of theater, but nevertheless...

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of watching, downloaded a performance earlier.

I really want to try and find a good version of a Midsummer's Nights Dream too, just because it's kind of in line with what I said I wanted earlier. Stuff like that but less Shakespear-ish would be nice too, maybe a bit more modern.

Any recommendations for fantasy themed plays in specific?

Best way of 'getting into theatre'?
go and see some fucking plays. Of all sorts. Reading scripts as a means of 'seeing a play' is like watching porn as a means of 'having sex'.
