ITT: Annoying shit at your local library.

My local library is beautiful. The architecture is amazing, a real piece of art.

Also the stacks have a glass floor, but they never let anyone in there anymore ;_;

I couldn't find any pictures of the interior, but it is gorgeous. The library is centered on a large domed rotunda, a huge reading room and non fiction hall branch off to the left, with a beautiful mural about 20x30 feet on the back wall. The interior is all in sparking white marble with soft painted accents, drawing the eye to the lofty ceiling. Up a sweeping, curved marble staircase from the rotunda is the expansive reference room. Off to the right of the rotunda is the former card-catalog room, which now houses some fiction, as well as the smith room, which is down a gleaming white marble staircase with a simply elegant dark wood railing. Downstairs is the children's room, which, by means of a long marble staircase, totally blocks out the noise of the rambunctious young ones. It is a truly gorgeous building. I love that my city is so blessed.

They also have a museum pass program, where you can get into lots of Boston's museums for nearly free.

>> No.2801549

I don't have anything annoying to say about my library.

Not at my university library. The entire bottom floor is designated "group study," meaning hundreds of jocks crowding around laptops, talking, laughing, dribbling basketballs, and basically just ejaculating onto every surface. There are always several old, insane "community members" that play poker and shit on the computers.

Upstairs is designated "quiet study," and yet, probably due to the fact that my school is full of stupid fucking people, there is constant noise from conversations, cell phone calls, sonic earbud-leakage, eating noises, and who-the-fuck-knows what else.

Also, it's fucking stuffy as fuck on the second floor, meaning it's easy to fall asleep.

Also, the hours are terrible (closed by 6:00 on Friday and Saturday nights; not open until 1:00pm on Sundays).

Plato was discoursing on his theory of ideas and, pointing to the cups on the table before him, said while there are many cups in the world, there is only one `idea' of a cup, and this cupness precedes the existence of all particular cups.

"I can see the cup on the table," interupted Diogenes, "but I can't see the `cupness'".

"That's because you have the eyes to see the cup," said Plato, "but", tapping his head with his forefinger, "you don't have the intellect with which to comprehend `cupness'."

Diogenes walked up to the table, examined a cup and, looking inside, asked, "Is it empty?"

Plato nodded.

"Where is the `emptiness' which procedes this empty cup?" asked Diogenes.

Plato allowed himself a few moments to collect his thoughts, but Diogenes reached over and, tapping Plato's head with his finger, said "I think you will find here is the `emptiness'."

It's a waste of money; the computers are the most expensive things in the library. Computers aren't essential to any child's existence, regardless of economic standing. For a kid, computer usage consists almost exclusively of playing Angry Birds and Runescape. This is all well and good, but there's no reason for taxpayers to be responsible for providing the expensive infrastructure for a child to participate in frivolity.

The next time you complain about public libraries being underfunded, try to remember how much of the that funding is allocated for the solve purpose of allowing homeless people to watch porn and children to play flash games. If you want to use a computer, go to a cyber cafe. The primary function of a library is to provide books, not free facebook and porn access.

used to live in a mid-sized town. not so much in the way of minorities, but there was no self check-out, and sometimes i'd get in line behind suburban moms checking out the max # of books allowed, so 30 children's books. in addition to just scanning everything, they have to keep rearranging because the counter-space is small, and they've got their selection spread out between back-packs and a little plastic children's wagon thingy. and here i am, with one DVD, card out.

and then during peak hours, i'd get to the front of the line and be told that the staff at circulation wasn't getting reserved items (which are behind that counter), just because of the wait it would impose on other patrons waiting in line. but instead, i woul dhave to go the the research counter at the other end of the library, send the research desk-person back across the library to the circulation counter to find my reserved item, then get back into line at circulation.

Never liked University libraries never really felt comfortable in there. I work at my local public library and yeah everything in this thread is true: white trash and bums using computers, checking out movies (it's really heartbreaking when a parent gets cards for their children just so they can check out more movies [we have a four dvd limit] and always tell them no when they try to check out a book) and fucking everything up, but it makes it exciting and interesting. We have a bum who comes in and goes back to the non fiction section and takes a book on the civil war and just reads it. Over two summers I've watched this clear out our entire civil war history section and now he's moved on to the revolutionary war. We have a summer program for kids and young teens that revolves around reading and getting prizes. Sure we have to bribe them to open a book but it is really heartwarming seeing kids get excited about reading and feels even better when one or two of those kids keep coming back. I couldn't imagine working in a university library they're always so clean and quiet it makes me wonder what the fuck the people who work there do all day.

The nerve!

The public library in my hometown is crap, almost all books have to be ordered in from other libraries because the entire library's stock is tailored to old women (bar the children's section of course).
My university library is better but it does have some problems, for example the Vonnegut was limited to SH5 and wrecked copies of Mother Night and Sirens whilst the only copy of In Search of Lost Time bar the french one is the original Moncrieff translation and thus also ancient and in poor repair.
However I can forgive these problems because of the amazing stock it has of works from around the world which embarrasses my local public which doesn't even have a good copy of Leaves of Grass.
A fun fact about the University library is that it's sinking by a few cm each year because the weight of it's books wasn't accounted for when it was designed.

I love that last fact. I wonder how much an ebook server weighs.....
ask someone who works at a uni library anything, though I don't know too much....

My university's library is undergoing a 2 year retrofit process for a similar issue.

I'm from NYC and I'm a wonderful person to be around. Sorry that you're wrong.
