He's thematically predictable and his endings have a really rushed feeling to them, but the imagery is stellar and the ideas themselves are worth exploring.

Stephen King uses the name Shardik for mechanical bear that guards a "beam" - or support structure of the universe in his Dark Tower series

I know! Every two or three pages I can't help but close the book, childishly turn it this way and that in the light and admire the whole thing. And it's really (for lack of a better word) cute how well depicted the protagonists are. Usually not fond of illustration over imagination, but it fits in nicely here.

I just started it yesterday and I can't put it down. I wasn't expecting much but I've been blown away. It's a really addictive read.

Next up is either Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close or Billy Budd, Foretopman. All three are assigned reading for the summer.

Any recommendations on which book I should take on next, since I'll probably finish One Hundred Years of Solitude by the Fourth?

Bret Easton Ellis is awful writer, and I base this on having wrestled with his prose for almost hour and a half combined. Maybe someone here could provide more qualified insight. Androids isn't among Dick's best work so if you haven't read him before I'd suggest picking up Ubik or Zap Gun (if you want something more light-hearted). If you liked Hunter Thompson (and I see no reason for that not being the case) I'd reccomend Hell's Angels (journalistic novel that he made his name on), or Great Shark Hunt (collage of his texts).

And if your air conditioner isn't working, I suggest reading The Drowned World.
