What does /lit/ think of my collection of books on religion and philosophy? What other books would you recommend?

It stands out a mile that you totally lack occult books in your collection, young pursuer of truth !

The title is a bit misleading. The author isn't saying people intentionally choose to be depressed. That would be ridiculous. Rather, she is saying that people don't realize when they are depressed that they have a choice to think about something else and re-direct the brain away from the depressive thoughts. She provides techniques on how to do re-direct your thinking when you start to get into the cycle of depression. It is basically the same concept as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This book completely changed the way I view depression and since I first read it and started using the techniques she outlines in her follow-up book "Brainswitching out of Depression", I haven't had a prolonged bout of depression. Whenever I start to feel depressed, I just use these techniques and it pulls me right out.

This.

What you, OP, have is nothing but Christianity refutations. If you want to learn about philosophy, you can do it two different way. You can read the contemporary philosophy and then read historic philosophy. This will give you a top down view of it. Or you can read about historic philosophy and then read contemporary philosophy in a chronological way. This will give you a bottom up view of it.

Imo, go for the bottom up as it will give you a clear understanding of the original(or as close as original) views and then we can see how it evolved/diverged into/from modern philosophy.

Then theres two main philosophy divides within the history of philosophy. East and the west. Do not let yourself be fooled into thinking one is superior to another. The methods of east/west are different. Where as west mainly uses logical system. East mainly used both logical and mysticism. Many in the west tend to think east "philosophy" is nothing but mysticism, but thats not true. Logical/rational system was highly systematized/developed in the east.
Just be cautious of taking anything at face value when dealing with eastern logic/philosophy. There are plenty of loops or supposedly "contradictions" in logic and eastern philosophers dont shy away from showing that. The more you read eastern philosophy the more you can solve those supposed contradictions (logically).

There is also another difference in east/west. West = deductive reasoning. East = inductive reasoning.

It's wrong.

>> No.2774648

It's pretty boring OP. You have all these analysis books on the philosophy but hardly any by the actual philosophers themselves.

>> No.2774651

Terrible. Where is the actual philosophy? Everything is just text books about the stuff.

You don't have even the most elementary of philosophical works.

>implying depression is not a choice

I used to be suicidally depressed. I quit smoking marijuana and cigarettes and started eating right and jogging a lot and it completely went away. This was a depression that persisted for years and years.

I still have suicidal thoughts but I choose not to engage with them. Meditation has given me the ability to pick and choose what thoughts I believe in.

But you don't want to hear that. You're "special". Your homelife was "really fucked up". Fucking pussy, you have no idea the kind of shit I've been through without SSRI's, and I feel all better now.
