Tell me why I shouldn't go on ebay and buy this beautiful collection of clothbound classics as opposed to buying the same works from different publishers for more and having them look like a trainwreck in covers that don't in any way suit the sophistication that the book offers.

Do whatever the fuck you want, nobody cares about you.

I always thought the great books series bindings looked terrible, like textbooks or reference volumes you only cracked open because you have to.

Which makes sense since it's published by an encyclopedia company.

>> No.2773945

Because all of those books suck

>> No.2773947

I've never particularly liked that series. They don't look that great and the text is pretty small I'm guessing. It's up to you, obviously.

How much for it?

Have you considered buying from the Folio Society?

These books aren't for reading, they're for showing off.

I've considered paying too much for a book, yes.

If you want to collect well-made hardcovers you're going to have to pay more than at Barnes & Noble.

Yes but the Folio Society appears to have a rather sparse selection. Is there any other place where I could find good hardcover books?

>> No.2774033

people will think that you just bought the collection, as assembled in the board rooms of some publisher, because you don't have personal taste in books

www.bookfinder.com

Or you could go to a used book store (if such still exist in your area) and find hundreds of excellent hardcover editions of literature for very little money which I'm sure the bookseller would be thrilled to get rid of.

ITT: People assume style and aesthetics are more important than substance and content.

That somehow the exterior can impugn the words held within.
Or perhaps, it is mistaken ideal that the books "deserve better" in that the person is incapable of fully appreciating the works unless their exterior is pleasing to the eye.

There are a multitude of explanations, but they are return to the person is not confident in the value of the work in of itself.

Were they thus confident, they would see that book collections are mere vanity, a buying in of materialism and consumerism.

There selection is small because they don't keep everything in print simultaneously. Things go out of print, they print other stuff, reprint older things, etc. If there is a book they don't have currently in print you can probably get a new one from a few years back from abebooks or something.

It has nothing to do with feeling a shitty cover detracts from the insides. It's just the same feeling people have with paintings. If you had a painting masterpiece, something you place a lot of value on, you'll want to frame it with something to show that value, rather than a cheap plastic frame you found at Target. The plastic frame doesn't detract from painting, but it certainly doesn't feel suitable for a masterpiece.

All that shit is to be found online for free. Be sure to use a first class e-reader in order to have a corresponding level of sophistication! I hear the new Kindle will have a small display on the back too that shows the title of the book so people can still see what you are reading in public.
