Maybe the American thing for irony and aversion to sincerity is because of the theological underpinnings of the country, because only God deserves seriousness.

I am writing this here because I don't have the energy to do anything with it. If you do, you're welcome to it.

Are you implying that anyone is remotely serious about God here? No one actually reads the Bible or listens to preachers, there is simply an unspoken agreement that Jesus said whatever the rich and powerful Christians believe he said. We like irony and insincerity because we're rich and so we're used to seeing corruption and crime. We're also used to disappointment because we're very good at idealizing everything.

it's because they're too cynical and disillusioned to believe any of the great American ideals about freedom and the pursuit of happiness, etc., and you could probably include organized religion with that.
America is one of the few countries atm that still has big ideals and pretensions about itself, but they're slowly breaking down.

It's funny because Americans seem laughably sincere and unironic to Eurotrash like me.

Yeah, I thought the stereotype was that Americans are ridiculously sincere people whereas Europeans are overly stoic.
