It originally meant "acute" - i.e. clever and cunning. My mum used to say "don't be cute, anon" when I was getting a bit lippy and smart-mouthed.

However, words change meaning, and cute now means "endearing", or " being a bit infantile and attractively young", like a seal or a puppy.

Audrey Hepburn may come under the first definition (I've no idea, she may have been thick as pigshit, wasn't she Dutch or something? either way it's not what she's famous for), but she hardly follows the second.

There are many words in the English language which are better suited to describe the person in question, my only sadness is that people simply don't ever use them.
