Infinite Jest. I have finally finished the main book and am about 1/4 of the way through the articles at the back.

Are you seriously implying you didn't get American Gods?

On the topic: The last book I read...well, probably Sherlock Holmes short stories. But I read those every night.

Oh come on, old sport. That was worth at least a 1.

No I understood most of it, but knowing nothing about mythology or gods I had no idea what was going on half the time in reference to the gods. Especially the novella that comes with the 10th anniversary addition.

>>2738800
mhm, I've got the first copy of the book, so no clue about the novella.

If you don't know about myths and stuff it might be a bit confusing. Thanks god I'm a sucker for that. What precisely irritated you, maybe I can help out. Although it's been a while.

Nah I did quite a bit of reading through wikipedias to clue me in a little on who the characters were, you should check out the novella though if you were a fan of the book though, interesting addition to the story to say the least.

>The Wind Through the Keyhole.

Story within a story within a story. One of the biggest piles of shit I've ever read, this coming from someone who enjoyed the Dark Tower series.

I was thinking of picking that up this week as well.

>> No.2738951

Basically it's about 5% Roland and the gang, he then tells them a story from his past which is about 15% and then in the story from his past, he tells a fictional story (the wind through the keyhole) to a child, which makes up the last 80% of the book. It is utterly disappointing.

You needed to be clued in about the gods... really? I kinda thought they were all somewhat common knowledge and if not they were explained (like Anansi).

Anyway, I've not read it for about 5 years or so, but I distinctly remember preferring Anansi Brothers over it

So new Dark Tower book isn't worth picking up?Do we learn anything new in the 8th book or should I just disregard it?

Honestly? It's largely irrelevant, other than:

His mother being aware of her death at Roland's hands having been informed by Flagg and forgiving him in a letter he finds a few years later.

That's the only real point of interest.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

I felt like a monster masquerading in fine clothes. I was grinning and grimacing simultaneously. Also I was smoking as I finished the book.

But really, few novels have ever spoken to my soul like this one. As lame as that sounds.

Man I trucked through that book at the speed of sound, but the ending just felt so... anticlimactic (which might have been the point?)

Anyway: I just finished The Secret History and boy did I like it. I thought the epilogue sort of ruined it in some ways, but Ms. Tartt might have just been making a complex reference to Crime and Punishment, since there were already some pretty drastic parallels as well as a few explicit references in the main book.
