You're going to be really upset when I tell you there are two bibles up there then. A King James, and a German New-Testament from the late 1780's that has been in my family forever... It's on the bookshelf because the worst thing you can do with paper that old is put it in plastic or a sealed container. It's much better to just let it out in the open air to out-gas. You risk moisture damage and whatnot, but better than acid-damage. The binding has red-rot, so I'm treating it with the British Museum leather-formula to slow it down, eventually it will need rebound, but I'm not going to do that until I can afford the several thousand dollars to have it done correctly.

Also, I own at last count five Bibles of different translations. Very, very helpful for reference. I also up there have The Confessions of St. Augustine and Varieties of Religious Experience. That's just a small selection of my "Theology and Philosophy" books.

The thing you have to realize is that in the normal world, this guy is extremely well read (judging by his bookshelf), outside of /lit/, this is a pretty fine collection of solid works interspersed with some entertaining pulp. This might be the only time I've seen Henry Miller in a bookshelf thead, which in my mind is a plus to him.

He's got quite a bit of non-fiction/military/history, which of course isn't /lit/ at all, but his actual fiction selection is solid to great. Another plus, is that every one of these books looks like it's been read, unlike most bookshelf threads where it's a bunch of pristine /lit/ favourites arranges front and center.

Good job op, you're not a tryhard hipster faggot, nice bookshelf.

Here it is. Imagine it filled with all of Nietzsche's work including the Nachlass and a biography. Add some works on Buddhism, Vedanta, Cynicism, Taoism and Christianity. Some Sade and Stirner. Machiavelli and Gracian. A few short stories and some poetry, and that is all there is.

I read plenty of different things, but have made the resolution to only keep physical works in my possession that I keep coming back to again and again. My collection of physical books serve not only as reference but also as artefacts of what has influenced me the most. As for the rest, I'm happy to loan, borrow and download. Funny story about that friend... Met him on the Beach in Carmel, CA... He looked like your standard California beach slob, but seemed friendly enough so I offered him a beer.

He ended up being pretty fucking cool... it got dark, and he asked if we all wanted to come back to his place and party, of course we accepted. His place ended up being a "cabin" in the middle of Big Sur, 5 miles from no-where, right on the bend of a river in the forest, and it was like 6000 Sq feet.

So, the guy basically stood up after about an hour and said "who here can cook". I said "I can make something up quick, what would you like?"

"Fajitas"

He had nothing in the house with which to make Fajitas... so he told me to make a list of what I'd need, now, we were like 45min from the nearest grocery store, and no one was in any condition to drive.

I made out the list anyway, he picked up the phone, dialed a number, and without even saying "hello" said "I need this stuff at the cabin..." read the list, and hung up. 30min later a guy pulled up, handed me two bags at the door, and turned around.

I then cooked fajitas, he loved them... He then turned to me and said "Man, these are the best Fajitas I have ever had, you are officially invited to all of my parties."

And, he held true to his word, and became something of a good friend. Fucker got me two-grand tickets to a scotch-tasting in Monterey for my birthday.

Well, to offer an equally serious explanation to this serious question, let me be perfectly honest with you here. None of these books were read, nor has this ever been intended. Their sole purpose is to be collected in the most random and, according to the established and unshakeable tiers of our time, shitty fashion possible. This way, once photographed, they serve to enrage and disappoint internetarian authorities such as yourself, which is how I seek daily pleasure. Only trouble is, one always has to wait for those bookshelf threads to pop up!

Apart from that I cannot see a reason to bother owning books. Though... probably... rainbows.

Actually, one or two of Anne Rice's books are okay. The Witching Hour has its moments, as do the first three books of her Vampire Chronicles. That's true, but with the global influence of outsourcing, tech jobs are the first to go. Sure, few positions that demand high levels of knowledge or creativity are safe. But the 'up and coming programing degree' is going to be located in India, china, and Russia. Did you know in India, telemarketing and CS jobs are considered the best and most respectable jobs? (On par with doctors and sciences) In America they're on the lowest tier. The foreigners work better, for cheaper, because they actually WANT to do it.

To keep it /lit/ related, The book The 'World is Flat', is a great summation of where the world looks to be heading in this area. It's not a bad thing that outsourcing exists, it just means that countries like America have to change their business to no longer be the producers, but the managers of creativity. The political economy is fascinating right now as it really is becoming a survival of the fittest.
