It's great, but it doesn't pick up speed until a few hundred pages in, like >>2714708 said.

I am not sure what you mean by "roach tier" exactly, but judging from that list it sounds pretty good. Is that in the immortal sense? Like how people imagine roaches roaming the Earth after all else is destroyed by nuclear holocaust. Thanks for the tip, I'll press on.

It touches a lot on addiction and drugs, especially in the beginning, but it's about much, much, more than that. Give it a shot, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I just finished the third chapter, I've got to say I've found it very darkly funny so far, and the tone is nicely different from anything I've read before.

Does this dark humour and tone carry on through the novel? When I first bought I was quite scared of it's scale but in small chunks it seems perfectly manageable, it's not hard to take in the information.

With it being summer I have a lot less personal time as I'm spending a lot more with my friends and my girlfriend, so I'll be lucky if I can manage 2 or 3 chapters a day.

Honestly, read Don Delillo's Underworld instead. It's much more entertaining and readable.

It really is a great book. It isn't really a proponent of drug use though, in fact I would say a lot of the book deals with how addiction clouds our ability to connect with other people properly.
