What are some books with unlikeable protagonists?

Picture only slightly related, I guess.

>Unlikeable.

Yossarian was amazing.

Catch-22 is a masterpiece.

people will post catcher in the rye, but that's only because they are ashamed they were themselves once like Holden

Child of God by McCarthy. The protagonist, Ballard, doesn't give a fuck about anything and he's basically an animal. He provides an entertaining story but you're kind of glad when he loses a limb and everything else.

Not just the main protagonist, but no one in this book was really likeable.
Shitty father with overly idealistic views and little or no personality, Steinbeck's obligatory evil female character, brothers who hate each other, fratricide, etc.

I still am like Holden. You're only pretending not to be because you're a phony.

Every single Ayn Rand character.

And the saddest part is she tries to make you like them.

The Stranger. The protagonist commits murder because of some existential angst and then rationalizes himself into Satre's idiotic philosophy right before he is hanged.

>> No.2664090

>>2663884

I am pouring my way through Notes From Underground for the second time, and am enjoying the humor much more the second time. During my first read, I saw the book as unfocused and hated the underground man. My next read has had me frequently laughing at the dark humor that infuses the book. Does anyone else see this book as an inverted version of Plato's cave allegory? He can see the flaws in the common man, yet this propels him to dig farther and farther into a literal cave. While he is metaphorically being lifted, he is literally sinking into a cave.

I agree for the most part, I'd just say that Randy Lenz was the only completely unlikeable character. I imagine many can relate to Orin's narcissism.

Randy Lenz was my favourite character. His chapters were fucking hilarious.

No Confederacy of Dunces? I mean, I thought Ignacius was hilarious but the number one complaint about the book I hear is that he's so unlikable it makes the book unreadable.

>> No.2664261

A Clockwork Orange? Depending much on the reader, I guess.

Demons, every character is a different flavour of miserable human being.

Player Piano, Sirens of Titan, hell, most of Vonnegut's protagonists are unlikeable unless you decide to sympathise with them because of the horrible things happening to them.

The Handmaid's Tale, to an extent.

>Sirens of Titan
Mother Night and Deadeye Dick also.
