Why do writers make such an effort to distribute "her" and "his" and similar pronouns equally between the sexes? Don't females get more than their fair share when we call countries and boats etc. by female pronouns?

Some authors don't even divvy the pronouns up. They just use the feminine throughout. It's like affirmative action for pronouns.
