But being a cynic and being an asshole are two different things. Op just wants to share some feelings about Vonnegut and then you've got some random prick trying to shit on him.
I know it's nothing new, but I've always wondered what it is that drives these people.

I think most 16 year olds have read Slaughterhouse-5 and nothing else by him.

Has anyone read Sirens of Titan? It's one of Vonnegut's first novels but it's probably my favorite.

Sirens is one of my favorites, along with Mother Night, Slapstick and Cat's Cradle

>Sirens of Titan

Holy shit this book is good, Also Cat's cradle and breakfast of champions

I really didn't think Slaughterhouse 5 was his best, hell iliked galapagos and bluebeard more than i liked it

>> No.2638843

>>2638817
I agree. Sirens might be my favorite thing that I've read by him, and I really haven't read enough.
>>2638819
I wanted to read Mother Night but some cock spoiled the ending for me. Been waiting for years hoping I would forget, but when you try to forget something, you won't.
Anyway, Cat's Cradle was awesome, but my friend told me that it was too boring for him to read. My friend sucks.
>>2638825
God Bless you Mr. Rosewater was not what I expected but it was great. I was giving my friends in the car a short description of the premise and it went something like
"So he bayonets these guys"
>This aint gonna turn out well
"...and so he finds out that the guys he bayoneted were firemen."
>*groan of dismay*
"And he's always wanted to be a fireman since birth"
>*Loudest grown of dismay*
It was great, I think they really want to read it now.

Unfortunately, I've only read Sirens. It's one of my favorites (though that's not saying much considering I have a shit load of favorites). I'm thinking about going for Breakfast for Champions during the summer. Good follow up or no?

Not enough for what? To satisfy your need for meaning in life? The worls is what it is. Like it or not. And the scientific method is the surest way to understand it. Sure you're left unsatisfied. But then you deal with that. being not satisfying is not a good reason to dismiss it.

>> No.2640589

>>2640580

>the scientific method is the surest way to understand it

It's the surest way to understand science. Science is one of the frameworks we have for understanding reality, but without being complemented by other disciplines it will only lead you so far. We can only draw conclusions up to a point about society and consciousness and self and being and power structures given only science. It's not enough.

>> No.2640601

I sort of agree with you I think. Science is the best way to understand how the universe works. But humans... we're much too complicated to be understood.

Too complicated to be understood in the way we want to understand ourselves, maybe. But the way we want to understand ourselves may end up being total nonsense in the light of science.

So much of our beliefs are shaped by rationalization of gut feelings, it's hard to believe we can really know anything with certainty (except, of course, things like math)

I read a book a while ago, can't remember the name, but it's main point was that the decisions we make ie who to date, who to marry, what job to take, what college to go to, where to move to etc... are all made on a subconscious level and then the rationalize them.
Bottom line, we consciously do not really know why we make the decisions we make.

>> No.2640806

>>2640797

I read a study somewhere that all 'conscious' decisions we think we make are actually made seconds prior before we even perceive them.
