Hello /lit/
I'm writing a paper on Nietzsche's influence on modern 20th century existentialism (yes I know Nietzsche is the freshman in college's cliche favorite philosopher but it was one of the better topics to choose.) Either way, I was wondering if you guys had any tips or works/essay's to check out for this. I am doing my own research as well but figured I should expand out my research as much as possible.

Bumping with strange pictures,
thanks for the future help.

After some research I have decided that I am also going to add in Satre's influence into modern existentialism.

pick one.

you're writing a fairly short undergrad essay at best... you would do yourself a favor if you tried to limit the range of your essay to start with

existentialism=existentialism

Don't bother with Sartre. He's not even comparable to Nietzsche. While Sartre was a smart guy, he unfortunately convinced a generation that their pathetic angst was genius, while they completely ignored his emphasis on total responsibility (which was ripped off from Nietzsche anyways). You'd benefit from Heidegger much more. Kierkegaard is an interesting pairing with Nietzsche, they're stylistically similar working largely in aphorism and parable (Either/Or and The Gay Science are great books to compare) and dealing with many of the same struggles. Kafka, is another great pairing with Neitzsche. They're only 30 years apart, but both 100 years ahead. They perceive the ultimate result of enlightenment thinking which is the destruction of logos. The loss of logos is the root of exstistentialism for both those authors.

Maybe also throw in Stirner.

It's 2000 words which isn't bad at all, but when our topics were assigned it was just a philosophical idea. This was the best I could do to shrink existentialism down to a writable paper topic.

>> No.2583657

it would probably be more interesting to write about theorists influenced by nietzche who undermined/negated "20th century existentialism"

Heidegger will be impossible to read if you are just getting into philosophy.

I don't really have to read their works, just connect the dots between what they have done and expressed in their works with what was expressed in modern existentialism.

Either way I'm going to use Nietzsche and Kierkegaard

I find Heidegger actually fairly clear in what he's saying, he just employs a lot of obtuse terminology. And frankly, if your concern is Existentialism and Being then he's pretty much the fuckin man.

Would probably help to know what texts of Nietzsche's you're working from OP. As reading all of them for a 2000 word paper would be ridiculous.

For Nietzsche I'm probably going to use The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

For Kierkegaard I'm going to use Either/Or.
