I'm taking a class on the Young Hegelians and one of the books I'm going to be using for my final paper is "The Ego and His Own". The library has the edition translated by John Carroll but I'm wondering if there's a better translation. Can anyone weigh in?

Be cool, Schopenhauer. I'm taking the class not because I'm a Hegelian but because I want to understand their arguments better. I still prefer you to Hegel.

Schopenhauer would just tell you that you shouldn't waste your time reading bad books

It's a 4000 level class that's titled "topics in the philosophy of religion" and the Young Hegelians were the topic that the professor chose for the semester.

If I had a time machine I'd go back and instigate a fist fight between Hegel and Schopenhauer, if it didn't actually happen to begin with. Id love to see that...shit would be so cash.

Well the professor is in the religion, so he doesn't have much of a choice. However, he doesn't limit the material covered to only religion. He's actually quite smart; he studied under Putnam and Quine at Harvard.

>Hasn't read the book

1/3rd is devoted to the topic of Feuerbach, religion, idealism etc.

As to op. This is the best version. Has a good introduction in it as well with quality footnotes. I would suggest reading Phenomenology of Spirit first so you can understand the Hegelian Dialectic which Stirner is also attempting to refute in the book.

Thanks so much! Nice to actually get a response to the question. I'm not quite sure that I'd be skilled enough to understand "The Phenomenology of Spirit" but I already read "The Essence of Christianity" which I know Stirner wrote this book in response to and a large section of "The German Ideology" with not too much difficulty. I'm sure that by not reading any full text by Hegel, I missed out on some of the intricacies but it's not like I was completely lost.
