/lit/, I can't remember the name of a certain relatively obscure (I think) German writer. Having only seen pictures of a few pages of one of his books, I remember it looked chaotic and experimental, switching language in mid-sentence and dividing midsections of words with division bars so that they could be read two ways (i.e. "I was very much looking forward to her p(art/uss)y").
Anyone know?

Hey REI a/o KOZ, you should read that DFW story "Oblivion".

How so? I can't find much about his work. Of course, I'm American; is he a lot more well known in Europe?

>>2538694
He's EXTREMELY well known in Europe, but sadly, these kind of books don't often make it over the Atlantic. Publishers don't want to take the chance, I guess..

I NEVER FINISHED READING THAT STORY BECAUSE IT BORED ME.

THE "STYLE"?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?

IT SEEMED TO ME "TYPICAL" OF OTHER OF HIS STORIES.

>IT SEEMED TO ME "TYPICAL" OF OTHER OF HIS STORIES.
Sure, but it's sort of DFW's style's final form, where everything becomes
>'this' or 'that' and then this happened, written as literally as possible in an abstruse, winding sentence (precisely the thing you would expect in his [that is, DFW's] written work) but then the next thing is 'quoted' as it's given its more 'everyday' or 'informal' sobriquet.
Just thought you'd be "into" it.

I UNDERSTAND NOW.

I DID NOT KNOW WHY YOU "RECOMMENDED" ME THAT STORY, APPARENTLY "RANDOMLY".

"OBLIVION" BORED ME BECAUSE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER'S FOCUS ON OLD PERSONS.

>>2538697
No. He's somewhat famous in literary circles. Not extremely at all.
But his works are hold in high regard.

>>2538755
No way. He's totally a household name over there. EVERYBODY has heard of him. You ask the average person on the street who Arno Schmidt is, they will tell you,

NO.

THEY WERE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS, SO THE ACCURATE "TERM" IS "PERSONS", NOT "PEOPLE".
