He's not anything like Tolkien. They're drawing from vastly different source material.

Tolkien is his biggest influence, he has said that himself. The fact that his fantasy epic is slightly different in tone and scope does not mean they are doing completely different things.

Whether he is truly superior remains to be seen.

It all rests on the mystery of the Others and what they're all about.

Also the Children. If the Children are as straightforward as they have been so far, they aren't really that different from elves at all, and he's a bit of a hypocrite for slamming elves (well, not slamming, he just explicitly stated he won't have such races in his stories)

I like the idea of the Others never being fully explained. It's more realistic to think that the people living in Westeros would end the war not knowing why they were being attacked.

It's not my fault if he misunderstands Tolkien.

Both are average writers that made interesting worlds and characters. I like that.

What? Do you disagree? You think there is no such thing as bad influence? You think being copied by retards makes you good?

I doubt you understand what average means. Just because asoiaf is popular doens't mean it's mediocre. It's very, very good. Not Gene Wolfe good, but then nothing is.

No, it's not. It's a lowbrow soap opera in an uninspired medieval herp derp world. I'm not saying JRRM doesn't have immense talent. He does. Anyone who can write a prose work thousands of pages long that is readable has incredible talent. But GoT isn't that great.

cool opinion

it's a shitty one, but let's call it cool

I've read better fantasy than asoiaf, it's not my favorite from the author, but it IS worthy of all the praise it gets. - the books, you're just a spazzing out because people talk about it a lot more thanks to the show

This being the same site that said the following about Hunger Gays:
>The books are fundamentally challenging for viewers in a lot of ways.
Come the fuck on - of all the negative reviews of ASOIAF you had to pick the whiniest.
