Anyone here have experiences with writers retreats or communes? even any in regards to other forms of art? share your experiences or things you have heard about them and notable ones to look up please.

I have been told good and mostly bad things, that its basically writers giving each other hand jobs to boost the good ol' ego.

shakespeare and co bookshop by notre dame in paris runs what is basically an anarchist commune exclusively for writers.

turn up, prove you're a writer, and if they have a free bed they'll let you stay as long as you want provided you read one of their books a day and help out around the store, no rent or anything.

there was a great documentary about it called 'portrait of the bookshop as an old man' that you should check out. the guy who still owns/runs it is this like gazillion year old guy who was fairly prominent poet amongst the beats.

think the ownership and running etc. is passing over to his daughter now though but from what i remember she intends to keep it the same
