Seconding John Cooper Clark, adding John Hegley and also Simon Armitage.

Seamus Heaney and Pablo Neruda are the two poets I find most inspirational - they're dedicated craftsmen, and supreme technicians, and their work just hums because they're so prolific they can't help themselves.

Recommending Berryman to a beginner poet is a little bit like recommending that a baby take charge of the firework display. I've no doubt it would be impressive, but eventually fatal.

Berryman is probably the finest poet of the 20th century, imho and btw, but as someone who's startan an a poetan, then I think it would either make you so depressed (because you will never emulate it) that you will throw your fool ass off a bridge. On the other hand, you'll read it, hate it, and then throw yourself off a bridge out of hatred, rage and the fact of bridges.

Berryman is a gateway poet - be careful.
