Lord of the Rings thread? Only ever read The Hobbit and LOTR. I have a copy of The Silmarillion, is it worth the amount if effort if I love the history and world?

>Silmarillion
No way in hell is this at all worth reading.

>> No.2388369

Is LOTR really good? As in, does it live up to the Hobbit? I read the Hobbit quite happily, but LOTR is much more of a commitment.

It's... Very different. Large, epic, and above all it's world building. Thousands if years of history hinted at throughout, and descriptions of every mountain and forest, but not necessarily a bad thing. Character development takes a very far back seat to making the charterers live up to their
epic-inspired roots.

But oh god, yes, read it. It's not as fun to read as The Hobbit but it's important. THE fantasy classic.

I read LOTR when I was 15 as well...

I would probably read an abridged copy (if I were to read it again). Nature imagery gets way too annoying.

I think the movies did the books justice.

True, but I feel like when I read LOTR I'm reading descriptions of a real place, not fiction. I mean in a limited capacity. lol

I think an arrow to your knee would do justice.

I loved reading LOTR, I recently went and looked for the hobbit, but alas, my local bookstore didn't have a copy. I went and bought The Silmarillion because of how hyped it was.

Boy was that a mistake. Is like the fucking elvish bible!

A bookstore that doesn't have The Hobbit? That's like a grocery store not selling water. Where the fuck do you live?

>> No.2388786

They were wonderful books, and to this day are my favorite.
I highly recommend the Silmarillion, especially if you love the history and world. It's at some points difficult to follow, but it's worth it. It's not a story, it's more like a textbook. Keep that in mind when forming your expectations.

>> No.2388789

>>2388786
As long as there are great deeds and poetry and sadness, like the best parts of LOTR. I know the writing style is different as well, but it's a much shorter book.

>> No.2388793

>>2388789
>much shorter book
While that's true about page numbers, it's going to feel longer. The first bit is a bit dry because it deals with the creation of the world and shit like that, and Morgoth being a dick. It really picks up once the Elves wake up and then it gets pretty good.
I also highly recommend the Children of Hurin.

>>2388793

Have that too, should I read Tye Silmarillion first? I tend to like reading things in published order, even though I know all this stuff was released posthumously do it doesn't really apply, heh.

>> No.2388799

>>2388796
Yeah, Silmarillion first. I like to read them in chronological order. Silmarillion is creation of the world and the First Age. Children of Hurin is the ending of the First Age, Hobbit is Third Age, LotR is Third/Fourth Ages. That's how I read them.
